One and only entity that governs the whole universe is Nature. Some have personified Nature as Almighty who is omnipotent and omnipresent. I endearingly prefer to call Mother Nature who is caring and benevolent. She takes care of and nourishes us all.

As a member of the great family, we must respect and care for every element of Mother Nature. Felling trees causes habitat destruction, ultimately leading to a big and irrevocable destruction. It needs to be managed scientifically to keep a harmonious equilibrium.

The evolution of computers from the abacus to modern-day technology is phenomenal. Computer technology has a profound impact on human life. Initially large, cumbersome machines, they have since transformed into compact, powerful devices. These devices help with various tasks like online banking, telemedicine, and space exploration. The integration of the internet has further enhanced information exchange and efficiency. Nonetheless, the rise of digital fraud underscores the importance of vigilance. Awareness is crucial in safeguarding against cyber threats. Overall, computing technology continues to evolve, shaping communication and human interaction in unprecedented ways.

Computer changed lives

One of the most significant inventions which radically changed human lives is the computer. The story of computers began with Charles Babbage. It is an interesting saga of endurance, constant eagerness to improve and develop among human beings. Scientific inventions have always been novel and beneficial to humans and humanity. Besides enriching knowledge about the unseen aspects of Nature, science provides techniques for human welfare. Its contribution to the service of humanity is phenomenal.

Computing is old

Computing was in use about 4000 years ago with the help of an incipient instrument known as an abacus. Crudely resembling the modern Kindergarten plaything, the abacus was an important tool for counting and basic calculation. Initially, the pace of the developmental strides was slow. With time, it evolved. Pascal invented the first mechanical computer in the seventeenth century.

Goliath to modern laptop

The story of the modern computer is about the fast and aggressive development of technology. Modern computers evolved from huge Goliath machines that needed large spaces and many people to run them. They have become thinner, lighter, more efficient, and tremendously powerful. From supercomputers to computers for common use, technology and machines have become an inseparable part of human lives. Now, computers are helpful to humans in more than several ways.

Computer ans Space science

Computer science and space science are hand-in-glove. Landing on the moon in 1969 is a gauge for the evolution of computers. At that time, the computer used had a system of AGC (Apollo Guidance Computer). It was capable of performing 40,000 instructions per second. This speed looks crawling in comparison to modern laptops, which can execute billions of instructions per second.

Ease of life with computer

As the space presence grew with the use of advanced technology and powerful dedicated satellites, communication became ultra-fast, precise and smart. With each passing day, computing and its machines are witnessing a paradigm shift in the outlook and way of working. Services range from rail reservation, ticket booking, tour planning, and online shopping. They extend to more complex tasks like weather forecasting, telemedicine, telesurgery, and advanced defence instrumentation and weapons. Computers and microchips have made their presence compulsory. Now, in modern times, anyone can do various banking functions, business and daily tasks on a handheld mobile smartphone.

Robotics

Advanced technology has merged with the ease of doing things. This combination has given rise to smaller, thinner, lighter, and more powerful devices. These range from mobile phones to wearable devices. Comparing modern computers with even two-decade-old ones, the difference is striking. It is amazing to see the drastic change in computer technology and robotics which run on it. Robots have become essential tools. They effectively carry out endless tasks under very difficult conditions that humans could not reach.

Computers used to be big

The early computers were very basic. Only a few decades back, the machine a common person owned carried out limited functions. They were very slow to the extent that a modern user can instantly rubbish them and treat them as junk.

Bulky and cumbersome

Computers were evolving. Their size was increasingly becoming small, thin and having tremendous potential and capability. With this, they started making inroads into the lives of common people. The bulky and costly computers were difficult to own. It was then a status symbol. The computers of the late 1990s were big, bulky, and cumbersome. They used a CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor and a big box. This box housed the CPU (Central Processing Unit). It also contained other subsidiary instruments, such as external storage media like floppy disks or magnetic tape readers. The keyboard used to be big. The total paraphernalia required a large table and a fixed place that accommodated a heavy voltage stabiliser and power source. The laptops were uncommon.

Input and output

A computer is a machine. It helps perform complex calculations and answer questions logically. Besides, they perform task which was otherwise time-consuming and labour-intensive. To perform a specific function, the machine required programming and a clear flow of action. Information is to be fed to obtain results. The process of input and output involves many ways, such as through card or tape punching, storage media and a processor to process information. Long and tedious research and development made it convenient, hassle-free and small.

CPU and processor

The machines used processors with limited capacity and ability. During the late nineties and early twenties, Pentium processors with MMX were considered advanced, but over time, they became obsolete. A new breed of powerful and fast processors came in. Increased RAM and the use of SSD (Solid State Drive) made fast and powerful computers accessible to common people. Modern computing machines have been considerably enhanced, making them faster and multitasking-friendly.

Earlier Computers

Earlier, the computing machines (or simply computers) had limited power and scope. Basic tasks like composing a draft document and editing were time-consuming and tedious. The composed drafts used to be saved on floppy disks or magnetic tapes and carried to be loaded on the other computer for correction and refinement before final printing and dispatch. Most of the work had to be done manually, with a fairly large scope of errors and sometimes blunders.

Using computer was thrill

Despite its comparatively slow speed, it was, nonetheless, pleasant to work on a computer. The computers, their speed and ease gave thrill. It used to be an amazing thing to watch a performing computer finish the work in minutes, which usually took days of work to finish with utmost neatness and perfection that was more pleasing than the printed one.

Internet give wings

The currency of the internet gave computers wings. Once a closed-door intranet, the internet proved to be a very effective and powerful medium for exchanging information securely, effectively, and in a short amount of time. The message and data can be sent almost instantly to any part of the globe or even in space to control the spacecraft and satellites. The best example was shown by the Indian satellite Chandrayaan-III, which landed on the most challenging, unexplored South Pole of the moon, and the rover Pragyan drove on the moon’s surface to carry out various experiments.

Networking

Computer networking and the use of the internet are a big boon in the field of information exchange and carrying out tasks with ease. Internet Protocol was consented to, and a system of World Wide Web (www) was developed, along with HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol). These and many other things made using the internet easy and free-flowing. The rapid data transfer and cloud storage enhanced accuracy, allowing for quick real-time information retrieval.

Pivotal in crucial activities

As is said above, the fast-moving computer technology and its wide coverage have made many things beneficial to humanity. In today’s world, it has a pivotal role. In maintaining law and order, tracking crime and criminals effectively has become easy and foolproof.

Human behaviour affected

From the very basic computing machines to ultra-modern, fast and more efficient computers, people have seen a fast and vast change in the way of using technology and, of course, human behaviour. (Psychology Today)

Artificial Intelligence

Increasing technology is opening new avenues. The latest AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology is fast gaining ground. It uses huge amount of data and analyses it to come to a logical cinclusion. Besides suggesting users various ways to deal with tricky situations and performing complex tasks easily in no time, AI has many more applications. Remote actions like performing remote surgery, controlling moving machines and repair work et cetera are but a few to name.

People’s concern

Computer technology has eased life and increased efficiency. Yet, it raises concern as well. The main concern is losing a job. A bogeyman started doing rounds, creating panic among the people. It has a flip side, also. Technologies have always helped human beings. After each initial hiccup, new technology becomes a habit, and skilled people work satisfactorily using that technology. It was so when the typewriter was introduced, and terrified people were apprehensive about losing their jobs. The same was repeated when manual typewriters were replaced by electronic typewriters. The thing is how quick people adopt and adapt a technology. Sooner the better.

Misuse of technology

With the development and expansion of computer technology, the conmen and hoodwinkers have insidiously crept in. Every good thing has been misused, and computer technology is not an exception. The crux is to be alert and informed. Knowing about the way of working of hackers and fraudsters, one can save oneself from the impending fraud and loss. The loss can be financial, emotional or physical. It is rightly said that “Information is protection”. So, be informed and stay protected.

Technology is future

Technologies are good. The impact of computer technology and its related skills is beneficial to all of us. Timely upskilling and using it can do wonders. Keeping abreast with changing times and technology helps in the job one does. Computer technology is a boon to humans, not a bane. The necessity is to adopt and adapt it adroitly.
