Nature's Narrative

Telling the story of our planet

One and only entity that governs the whole universe is Nature. Some have personified Nature as Almighty who is omnipotent and omnipresent. I endearingly prefer to call Mother Nature who is caring and benevolent. She takes care of and nourishes us all.

As a member of the great family, we must respect and care for every element of Mother Nature. Felling trees causes habitat destruction, ultimately leading to a big and irrevocable destruction. It needs to be managed scientifically to keep a harmonious equilibrium.

Here comes the LiFE, which is Lifestyle for Environment.

I endeavour to create impactful, quality writing pieces to instigate the thought process. It is how I want to contribute my bit to the social and environmental cause.

Come, embark on the journey with me. You will enjoy it, I am sure.

While packing his rucksack, his mind was roaming miles away from the place he was in. He was meticulously placing everything in his rucksack. Items ranged from a sleeping bag and a sleeping mat to a torch and an umbrella. He also included a pack of candles, a matchbox, and, yes, a knife. Occasionally, he would peek at a piece of paper, onto which various things were listed. He would tick items which were kept in his backpack.

Preparation for the memorable Journey

It was the preparation for a trek. Hills are his favourite place; trekking, hiking and camping are his likes. This time, he was on a memorable journey to Gangotri. Usually, a folding and easily put-up tent was his essential gear. This time, he discarded the idea to avoid extra weight. Instead of sleeping in a tent, he can take refuge under a natural shelter. This could be a jutting rock, a cave, or any available place to rest.

Gradually, he slipped into slumber and fell fast asleep. When he awoke, it was dawn

The Train Journey

He was to board a train and take an overnight journey. His berth was reserved, so he was not worried about getting a seat. Yet he reached the station well in time and enquired about the platform the train was to arrive. It was an express train which arrived on time. Embarking in his compartment, he reached his berth. After a while, the train left the station. It was eight o’clock in the evening, and darkness had shrouded the environment. The journey was comfortable. Sitting on his berth, he kept staring outside the window and thinking about the route and the trek. Gradually, he felt drowsy. Stretching his body on the berth, he slipped into slumber.

It was a pleasant journey. The bus passed through the most picturesque landscapes, terraced fields and great canyons. Slowly slithering and taking occasional breaks, it moved on the serpentine hilly roads. The bus crossed many valleys, meadows and narrow streams. While passing through the habitation, the bus would take extra precautions. People of the hills are simple, humble and polite. They are ready to help. The bus made several stops at villages along its route.

(2) Bhairon Ghati To Gangotri

The bus reached Bhairon Ghati. This village is a beautiful place nestled in the Garhwal Himalaya. By that time, the sun had started its downward journey. A few moments later, the bus began to move. Soon, it reached the destination. The first phase of the memorable journey to Gangotri had ended. This is a pious place. It is believed that here Sage Bhagirath prayed to Ganga to turn towards the north. Gangotri is the location where the Ganga (Bhagirathi) changes its course, meaning “Gangā Uttari” (Gangotri).

The long journey is rewarding. Some people can experience motion sickness and nausea. The repeated twists and turns of the bus cause these symptoms. Despite this, the scenic beauty and lofty mountains keep a traveller upbeat. A few moments’ rest, recharges fully. The sun was ready to go down beyond the horizon. The rimlit lofty mountain and rocky terrain look mesmerisingly beautiful.

(1) The Temple

Gangotri temple is dedicated to the goddess Ganga. It was built in the 18th century by a Gorkha General, Amar Singh Thapa. The temple is a simple yet imposing white structure with graceful arches. It also features beautifully embellished apical cone-shaped domes. It is believed that Bhagirath performed penance here to bring the Ganga to the earth. Situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand (India), Gangotri is one of the four pious religious spots (Chār Dhām). It is connected with a good motorable road. Reaching here is not a task.

Sitting on a large boulder, he dipped his feet in the cold water of the Bhagirathi River. A shiver went down his spine and gave him a refreshing feeling. He kept staring at the mountain. Vagabond clouds played hide and seek with the sun. A light breeze carried the aroma of conifers. Such was the magnetic attraction of the place that it was hard to move from there. He had to move.

Thanks Giving

Getting up, he paid regard and thanked the Almighty for allowing him to take the memorable journey to Gangotri. He looked up at the sky, which was a clear azure. The summers had started, and the ice started melting, increasing the volume and flow of the river.

Towards Gomukh

Harnessing the straps of rucksack to his back, he put on a pair of sunglasses, and a cap on his head. Casting a parting glance around, he lifted his handbag. He was now ready for the 19-kilometre Gomukh (Cow’s Snout) trek. The trek was exhilarating and enchanting. The dirt road passed through beautiful clumps of conifers and birch trees along the river Bhagirathi.
