Nature's Narrative

Telling the story of our planet

One and only entity that governs the whole universe is Nature. Some have personified Nature as Almighty who is omnipotent and omnipresent. I endearingly prefer to call Mother Nature who is caring and benevolent. She takes care of and nourishes us all.

As a member of the great family, we must respect and care for every element of Mother Nature. Felling trees causes habitat destruction, ultimately leading to a big and irrevocable destruction. It needs to be managed scientifically to keep a harmonious equilibrium.

Here comes the LiFE, which is Lifestyle for Environment.

I endeavour to create impactful, quality writing pieces to instigate the thought process. It is how I want to contribute my bit to the social and environmental cause.

Come, embark on the journey with me. You will enjoy it, I am sure.

Mastering New Skills for a Changing World

What skill would you like to learn?

It was a crowded room with a high dias and a judge’s bench in the centre. Suddenly, the humdrum stopped. People, clients, and the bar became attentive. The Hon’ble Judge arrived. The hand-operated fan started pulling by a man sitting outside the courtroom. “Peshkaar” (court clerk) placed the file before the judge, and the proceedings began.

The court room described above was the usual site in colonial India when almost all work was done manually. The official work was manual except for a few archaic typewriters. It didn’t need any specific skill. Later with the frequent use of typewriter and shorthand, the skill became necessary to record the proceedings and professional stenography.

There was a time when government offices used to employ individuals for routine tasks like writing letters, duplicating documents, and other clerical duties that required minimal intellectual and mental effort. Positions of the employees were designated by job titles. Draftsman, record keeper, or copyist (“Nakal Navis”) were among others who performed a particular job. These roles which did not demand specific knowledge or advanced education but were economical and suitable for minor official tasks. Gradually, as even basic technology began to permeate, work processes started becoming less reliant on manual labour and more dependent on machinery. The advent of the typewriter transformed official tasks, enhancing the quality of output. This shift was unwelcoming for old workers who were uncomfortable with the emerging trend and were reluctant to adapt.

The typewriter efficiently transformed handwritten documents into neat, legible text with minimal effort. It quickly garnered attention, and those keen on advancement began to learn its operation. With practice, they became proficient typists. This marked the emergence of a new class of white-collar workers known as “Typists.” It signified the beginning of office work mechanization, replacing manual labour with individuals skilled in operating typewriters. This skill revolutionized the workplace culture.

The term “skill” originates from the Old Norse word “Skil,” which means knowledge. A skill allows an individual to finish a task efficiently and with ease. For instance, typing on a typewriter was once considered a skill. As time progressed, the list of skills expanded. Activities like cooking, singing, sewing, and housekeeping, traditionally done by many housewives, evolved into specialized professions. Chefs, singers, tailors, and housekeepers emerged in the organized sector. New career vista like Hotel Management emerged. What was once seen as the hallmark of a good housewife, skilled in “household work,” became sought-after ability in high society, transforming learners into professionals.

As personal lives grow more complex, societies evolve in complexity as well. The “family,” once the foundational unit of society, has shifted towards the nuclear family model. Women, as equal partners in marriage, have joined the workforce. This change, along with a wish to save time and resources, has led to a surge of new inventions, highlighting the need for experts to manage them. Thus, the value of skilled professionals in their respective fields has become increasingly clear with time.

Essentially, skills can be categorized into three types:

  • Technical Skill – It encompasses tools and machinery including computers, computing, data management, programming, and similar technologies.
  • Soft Skill – It encompasses the ability to improve personal attributes like personality development, communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Life Skill – is essential and needed in daily life includes cooking, budgeting, and time management are essential and necessary for a healthy life.

In today’s world, where specialized work is increasingly valued and specialists in those fields are sought after, choosing the right skill set is crucial. Traditionally, roles like plumbers, carpenters, or electricians have been seen as technical jobs. But, the growing demand for expertise has expanded to include many roles formerly viewed as “white-collar jobs.” This includes engineers, technicians, doctors, painters, photographers, and even writers who adhere to professional standards and ethics.

The pursuit of “Skill” has escalated with the advent of new horizons in computers and computing techniques. The noise from all directions is blending into a cacophony, reaching a crescendo that is almost deafening. Nonetheless, as a skill equips an individual for a specialized role, a person with skills does not fear job loss. This is why skill development is also being promoted by the government.

Domains traditionally reserved for recreation or hobbies have now entered the realm of professional skill. The concept of skill has expanded into a broad umbrella encompassing a multitude of diverse talents. Poetry, photography, literature, painting, pottery, and even activities like fishing and sports, once considered purely expressive, have transformed into lucrative industries. Yet, securing a position within these fields remains a formidable challenge.

In the diverse array of skills available, it is crucial to thoughtfully select and master one’s chosen domain. Opting for a field solely for its allure can lead to confusion and disappointment. My past indifference and limited knowledge left me without a strong preference. But, observing others’ dedication has inspired seriousness in me. I have endeavoured to excel in areas like photography and writing, which resonate with me. I aspire to pursue writing and photography both as a hobby and a profession for the rest of my life.
