Strange voice
“Hey! How are you?” It seemed someone called me. The sound was a sweet, low whisper. I looked around. It was a clear sunny day with swinging flowers and a mild breeze. Drifting vagabond clouds against the blue background of the sky were adding glamour and romanticism. Except for some fluttering butterflies and insects hovering on the flowers, no one was around. The ambience was serene and soul-soothing. The amalgamated fragrance of flowers and vegetation was invigorating. The occasional synergy of chirping birds and the whizzing of bumble bees added a musical tone. While enjoying and gulping the nectar of nature’s beauty, the unexpected voice astonished me.
Conversation
“Look here, I’m in front of you…”, the voice said again. I moved my head and saw a beautiful butterfly sitting on a flower. It was a colourful butterfly with neat lines and bright wings. It appeared smiling. I was amazed. “How can a butterfly talk like us?!” I murmured to myself.

“Don’t get startled”, seeing me perplexed, the butterfly said, “I am a butterfly, talking to you”.
Nature has always fascinated me. Every aspect of nature is splendid, but seeing a talkative butterfly was a serendipitous experience.
“How come? How can you talk?” I asked.
The butterfly laughed and said, “Come, let us converse. I will tell you about me and my story”.
(1) Butterfly tried to teach
“Are you going to teach me now? A lesser mortal? Like really?” said I in a rather arrogant tone. I am a genuine Nature lover. Nevertheless, a sense of being human overshadowed my consciousness. This brought forth the hidden arrogance of my superiority.
“I am a lesser mortal. My life is very short, it is only a few weeks, not more than a month”, said the butterfly. After a moment’s pause, it continued, “A butterfly’s lifecycle is interesting”.
My curiosity was increasing. Leaning ahead, I stared at the beautiful, winged insect a bit too closely. Its large, compound eyes seemed smiling. The long but rolled proboscis was resting on its mouth. Two pairs of wings, arranged in two sets of large and small, were vibrant and adorned with minuscule scales. In fact, its transparent, chitinous wings, emerging from its thorax, were covered with colourful scales in a beautiful pattern. The creature’s slender abdomen was nestled between its wings.

I observed that it extended its proboscis in a manner akin to humans while they speak. Protruding its proboscis, it said, “I am your friend. I significantly contribute to the cause of the environment by acting as a pollinator to the plants.”
(2) It was awesome!
It was a phantasmagoric experience. I guffawed, seeing the little creature boasting about its achievements. “You are over-rating yourself,” I said. I looked cursorily and continued, “You and others like you do great harm to our plants by eating their leaves.”
After a brief pause, I continued, “You are a pest which inflicts losses”. I spoke like a judge pronouncing a judgment and looked at the insect with a belittling glance. The insect was unaffected. “It looks as if you are not fully aware of my life’s journey”, said the insect in a determined tone. It continued without a pause, “My story starts with my mother laying eggs on a leaf’s surface”.
A sudden gush of cool breeze shook the pedicle of the inflorescence on which the butterfly was sitting. It doesn’t, though, affect the insect. The butterfly ensured the grips of its slender legs on the flowers. It continued, “The bunch of flowers I’m sitting on is of Milkweed, my favourite plant. I grew up eating its leaves in my larval stage of my lifecycle”, said the butterfly.
It interests me. My arrogance had started melting. How can I, an admirer of Nature, be so rude and arrogant? Feeling embarrassed, I stopped unnecessary poking and started attentively listening to its story. The butterfly was speaking dreamily, in a soft but clear voice.
Lifecycle of A Butterfly
“I was encased in a tiny egg the size of a pinhead.” The butterfly was narrating about its lifecycle. It continued, “I was getting ready to come out and feel the world.” As if testing if I was attentive, the butterfly stopped and stared at me. (Butterfly identification)
“I’m listening”, I said. The butterfly seemed relieved. It started by saying, “My mom would lay one egg at a time”.
“How is it that you are many?” I almost jumped and asked in sheer curiosity. It giggled.
(1) Stages in the lifecycle
It dreamily looked up and around. “We are creatures which experience three stages in our lifecycle”, it spoke in a rather proud tone. It amused me.
(A) Egg
“My mother wasn’t the only one,” the butterfly continued. “Also, my mother lays eggs in batches. She often lays two at a time.”
“So, were the tiny dots I saw on the underside of the leaf you in the eggs?!” I inquisitively enquired.
“Yes,” it concurred. It said, “Eggs have ridged structure on their coverings. They are not perfectly round but a bit oblong.”
I recalled the dot-like protrusions on the underside of the leaves. I had observed tiny thread-like creatures wriggling and moving on the leaf, consuming it in places. It reflected to me that the creatures I confused with worms must have been larvae of butterflies.
“I have seen some worm-like creatures traversing and occasionally eating the leaves. What were they?” I asked the insect which was staring at me.
“Those were my brothers and sisters,” it said. It continued further, “After a week we come out of the egg. We do this by cutting and eating its case at the same time”.
“How?” I asked.
(B) Larva
With a bright smile and a sense of achievement, the butterfly said, “We transition through different phases during the lifecycle. We transform from one to another in a sequence. Each phase is altogether different from my earlier ones in shape, size, and appearance. The stage at which I am addressing you is my adult face.”
“What are the three phases of your life?” I further enquired.
“The transition revolutionises our life. It is our metamorphosis. After coming out of the egg as a leaf-eating larva, we transform into a dormant stage of pupa. We reach adulthood to feed on the nectar of flowers”. It halted as if trying to fill oxygen in its body.
“You please elaborate on this?” I eagerly said. Sensing my interest, the butterfly smiled and started saying,
“When we come out of the egg, we start feeding on the leaves we are born upon. During this active period of our lifecycle, we focus solely on feeding. As we consume, we become a devouring giant.”
“This is the stage when you cause damage the most by devouring the plant,” I said mildly. The butterfly didn’t say anything except nodding its head. After a while, it slowly but firmly said,
Butterflies Are Part of Ecosystem
“Eating and being eaten is the law of nature. We are all part of it”. The butterfly paused for a moment. Then it continued, “As a part of the vast ecosystem, we butterflies play our role. We contribute through different stages of the lifecycle”.
“Well said,” I endorsed.
I knew that the butterfly was telling the truth. The insect was conversing like a professional and effectively making its point. “You talk well and clearly,” I said patting its back.
The butterfly continued, “It is part of a large food web. We are a feed of many creatures like birds, lizards, spiders and the like. To guarantee survival, thus, our mothers lay many eggs”.
There was a substance in its talk. I recalled that the huge food web is the linchpin of the entire network known as the Ecosystem. All individuals play their roles in different capacities to run it effectively. It is the energy cycle which keeps life running and makes it vivid.

We continued our conversation. I spoke to the insect closely observing my face. “How do you transition to the next stage? Why?” I asked further.
Dormant Pupal Stage
“Well,” the butterfly continued and said, “After reaching the highest length, we grow ten times the starting size. This growth can reach up to five centimetres. We stick ourselves with a twig and transform into a small, motionless bundle. This is the pupal or chrysalis stage. Inside it, we undergo drastic changes. We take the shape of a winged adult, ready to fly and venture out far and wide.” It quietly started sucking nectar.
After having several sucks, extending its point, the butterfly said, “This is the essence of our life and its purpose. We are a link in the great chain. Take pride in contributing our share. Find satisfaction in the life process. We have a short lifespan, but for us, it is more than enough”. The insect summed up in an emotionally choked voice.
Opinion changed
Hearing the butterfly’s thoughts, my opinion changed completely. I began to appreciate not just the beauty of nature’s creations, but also their significance. The realisation that we are all part of a great system is in itself a great feeling. My mendacious feeling had volatilized. I was feeling buoyant and enamoured. My heart filled with compassion for every life form and for my newfound winged insect friend. With a heart filled with love and respect, I turned to the butterfly who was still waiting for my response and said,
“Thanks a lot, dear. You ignited a spark of compassion and respect for every individual in my heart. I respect you and your endeavour for propelling and running the life”.
Dream
The butterfly smiled and came to me to kiss my forehead. That awoke me from my dream. I dreamed of being in a verdurous place among many flowers and a kaleidoscope of butterflies. The crepuscule was setting in after the sunset; birds were returning to their nest.
Felt transcendent, I smiled at my dream and thanked the butterfly, which made me realise my tiny existence. The butterfly effectively told me about its lifecycle and role in the ecosystem.
