Difficult Phases
It is not difficult to remember and muse about difficult days of one’s life. From the day an infant opens eyes in the world, different phases begun their role to show their effect. It brings change in the body and psyche of the people. The happenings often don’t affect much to an infant or toddler, and to child to an extent. As a child grows and attain maturity, the happenings gradually start affecting. It is because of growing experiences and their possible fall out.
Difficult chapters in life can be more than one. They can be days or times, and their effect can be on the individual or on the masses. The intensity of toughness proportionately affects the experience one gets from them. Learning from enduring hardship is vital.
Passive effect of difficult phases
An individual while on the voyage of life, witnesses momentous occasions. These occasions do not directly affect the person but passively, it has an overall effect. The cascading effect of the result of a happening can change the very basics of an individual. The incident at Pahalgam in Kashmir in April 2025 shook the entire nation while it affected twenty-six families of the deceased individuals. Similarly, the widespread destruction and loss of life following the massive cloudburst and landslide in Uttarkashi gave a shock wave to many across the country though it did not affect them directly.
Life changing
A few incidents change the whole life of an individual or even the society and nation, while some become an example for future generations. Preserved in the pages of historical annals, these incidents teach lessons to many generations. The vivisection of India following the country’s freedom in 1947 is one such incident which gave a permanent scar to millions of uprooted people who had to leave their land and belongings and flee from their place. They lost not only material things but also compromised their dignity, faith and identity. Displaced and forced to live the life of a second-class citizen as refugees changed their psyche for all time to come, and simultaneously it helped enduring hardship.
A few haughty
The forced difficulties are because of a handful of bigots and haughty ones who don’t care about others except for their parochial gains. History repeated itself in 1990 when thousands of Pandits from Kashmir forced to leave the valley. The dignity of their women was publicly trampled, they were terrorised by public announcements to evacuate leaving their belongings. The rude and heinous activities went on unabated without check. It affected them all but also sent a strong shock wave across the country.
Invaders’ effect
History is full of such incidents. The invaders trampled the faith of the majority of natives who were proselytised. Their places of worship were desecrated, idols of faiths beheaded and broken to shatter confidence and dignity. Seats of learning like big and renowned universities were destroyed and consigned to fire. All this was done because of the whimsical attitude of a select few. The consequential effect was bound to be permanent, changing the demography and psyche of the people. The historical misadventures became a thorn in the flesh but also helped enduring hardships.
Personal attitude on difficult phase
At a personal level, incidents can be equally painful and sometimes joyous. They have the potential to change a person’s life depending on a person’s attitude. For a person, a difficult phase can be failing in a board examination, and it can be daunting. For some, nonetheless, it may be a casual thing. The effect is subjective and can’t easily be assessed. Those who believe that there are plenty of fish in the sea have a carefree approach in life. They do not care much about the intensity of an incident. Their belief system makes them immune to the problems. Their cool attitude helps them come out of the problem almost unharmed. Most of them believe in their efforts. They do not mind if they fall for they think it is an opportunity to learn and grow.
Lamenting not
The type of people described above have a practical approach towards life. They show a daunting spirit. Failures don’t deter them. They never lament failure or loss but start afresh leaving the past aside. For them, past incidents are not to lament but to learn a lesson, accumulate experience, refine skill and hit the target. They don’t believe in wasting time. This attitude was shown by the nation many a times to come out of negativity.
Unemployment
People faced a long period of unemployment and rejection. A quarter century after independence, the country passed through a difficult phase. The government policies were not sufficient to provide employment to youth. They felt frustrated and faced scathing criticism in families and among relatives. In the absence of a job and earnings, they felt like a burden. Lugging the feeling of uselessness, they dragged their life and fought the callous system which had no sympathy with them. The youths used to be under heavy pressure to become overaged. With each passing day, their frustration grew. A few would start to lose hope and live an unproductive life.
Penance paid off
Despite difficulties, they didn’t give up hope. They kept on trying, appearing for examinations, waiting for the results and facing disappointments. Nonetheless, they did not give up. Their hard work paid off, and with that, their hard phase passed.
Enduring hardship: Corona period
The COVID-19 pandemic came staggering, but soon it took the whole nation in its grip. It was a tough time for the nation, society, family and people. People faced isolation, lockdown and solitary confinement. The invisible enemy was incurable, except for quarantine, distancing, close watch and keeping vigil. Families lost their loved ones, and hospitals flooded with patients. The system was reeling under the pressure of adjusting things and fighting negative publicity on fake narratives by a handful of people. The negative forces tried their best to pull down and demean the honest government efforts to curb Covid19.
Negative forces
Opponents and sceptics tried their best to create a miasma of suspicion but could not deter the genuine efforts and people’s morale. The phase changed the perception of many. People did not lose hope despite frustration and indignation. This spirit and honest collective efforts of people and government, brought them successfully out of the difficult time.
Part of life
Difficult phases are part of life. They allows people to come out with flying colours. Resistance is essential, it produces counter force to equalise both for harmony. Nature knows it and thus it provides two opposite forces to let the circuit complete. The opposite forces are seen everywhere. It is why uniform and unhindered life becomes monotonous. The night gives realisation about the day, falsehood gives the realisation about truth. Things are good in balance and harmony.
Enduring hardship: Face head-on
A hard phase of life teaches good lessons and adequately trains people to cope with unpalatable difficult situations. Thus, head-on facing the difficult situation is the only solution. An intrepid person does not lament but fights bravely to win the situation.
