Nature's Narrative

Telling the story of our planet

One and only entity that governs the whole universe is Nature. Some have personified Nature as Almighty who is omnipotent and omnipresent. I endearingly prefer to call Mother Nature who is caring and benevolent. She takes care of and nourishes us all.

As a member of the great family, we must respect and care for every element of Mother Nature. Felling trees causes habitat destruction, ultimately leading to a big and irrevocable destruction. It needs to be managed scientifically to keep a harmonious equilibrium.

Here comes the LiFE, which is Lifestyle for Environment.

I endeavour to create impactful, quality writing pieces to instigate the thought process. It is how I want to contribute my bit to the social and environmental cause.

Come, embark on the journey with me. You will enjoy it, I am sure.

Games and Sports: From Ancient Civilisations to Esports

Modified on:

Games and sports serve as vital sources of amusement while enhancing physical and mental fitness. Although sports are competitive physical activities and games are structured, both terms are often used interchangeably. Historically, games have played a significant role since human society’s inception, with archaeological evidence suggesting their importance in ancient civilisations like the Indus Valley and Greece. The Olympic Games, revived in the 19th century, highlight this legacy. Sports have evolved and gained prominence, becoming political tools and renowned events, while popular games such as cricket and soccer generate significant revenue. Ultimately, games remain integral to human life, adapting with time and technology.

Key Takeaways

  • Games and sports enhance physical and mental fitness, playing a vital role in society from ancient civilizations to modern times.
  • While sports are competitive, games can be structured activities engaging body and mind, often used interchangeably, yet they differ.
  • The history of games dates back to ancient cultures like the Indus Valley and Greece, where they held significant social importance.
  • Modern Olympic Games, revived in the 19th century, highlight the ongoing prominence and evolution of sports.
  • Popular sports today include soccer and cricket, with cricket transitioning from elite recreation to a major commercial success.

Games and sports

Games and sports are a means of amusement; nonetheless, they keep the body and mind fit and alert, helping enhance cognitive skills. Whereas sports are competitive physical activities, games are structured. Every sport can be a game, but not all games are sports. Despite differences, games and sports are often used interchangeably.

Played using both mind and body, games and sports involve a player wholeheartedly. The mind games are more powerful than those played with the body appendages, like legs and hands. Sports requiring physical strength, like moving legs and hands, involve stressful muscular movement and increased blood flow. It enhances oxygen supply, thereby making the body strong and enduring, while games can be indoor, outdoor or board games.

Beginning

Humans are social by nature. Though animals also show the tendency of forming society, human society is highly organised and stratified. Human activities focused and often labour oriented. During prehistoric times, their activites confined to procurement of food. They would hunt individually, then in groups. The hunting needed high degree of precision, planning and physical strength. This might have led to organised activities leading to sports and games. Even in animals, cubs play with objects in ways that simulate hunting.

antiquity

The antiquity of playing games or sports is parallel to civilisation. We are still in the penumbra about sports during the Indus Valley civilisation, but archaeological evidence shows that Indus Valley people were fond of playing games. The findings from the excavation suggest that children may have been using terracotta toys for gaming purposes. The organised life of people gives ample scope to think that games must have been an important aspect of their lives. Findings like dice and pieces of clay boards show that board games were popular among them.

In Greek civilisation, games and sports were at their pinnacle. Physically fit and chiselled bodies with strong muscles was necessary; therefore, field games and athletics were essential. In ancient Greece, it was a quadrennial occurrence which was a blend of religious and sports jamboree. Games organised in honour of the god Zeus in Olympia. The winners honoured with the crown made up of olive branches.

Sports gain prominence

Games and sports were important in ancient times. Besides recreation, they gradually became a powerful political tool to gain prominence. The famous game of “Chausar” (game of dice), played between Kauravas and Pandavas in the great epic of the Mahabharata, was the major turning point. Pandavas lost everything, including their dignity, subjected to ridicule in the open house and exiled to the forests. Forced to lead a life in the forests with rigorous conditions imposed on them, they led a pauper’s life.

In the famous book Ben-Hur by Lew Wallace, a vivid description of a chariot race competition is provided. It was an impressive scene in the film of the same name. This shows that the track and field events were very popular in those days. Discus throw, Javelin throw, sprinting, boxing, et cetera widely practised.

Modern Olympic Games

Later, in the nineteenth century, the Olympic Games revived. A French historian and educator, Pierre de Coubertin, started the modern Olympic Games. The first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896. In the sports world, this is the most coveted and prestigious quadrennial event.

Important Sporting events

Apart from Olympics there are some other important sporting events. While some encompass major sporting events like track and field, and indoor sports like weightlifting and swimming, others are sport-specific. Some of the important sporting events are:

  • Winter Olympics
  • Paralympics
  • Asian Games
  • SAF Games
  • Commonwealth Games
  • Pan American Games
  • FIFA World Cup
  • ICC Cricket World Cup
  • Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments
  • Formula 1 Grand Prix

The list is indicative. It is the indication how sports are popular. India, which was lagging behind in the sports world, is now emerging as a significant player in the sports world. In Cricket, India is a bold signature. Hockey has since long been a popular game of India.

Relatively more developed society began sporting events. They acquired special techniques and framed rules to play a game. The ease of play, physical and mental involvement might have developed special liking for a game which in due course of time gained popularity and a means of revenue generation. In the modern world, some of the most popular sports are soccer, cricket, lawn tennis, and athletics.

Soccer

Football is the most popular game world over. Its approximately 3.5 billion fans give this game number one ranking in the world of sports. Thipopularity and adrenaline. Its governing body is FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association). Established in 1904 it has more than 200 members. With its headquarter at Zurikh, Switzerland, it is a prestigious organisation that organises several competitions including World Cup. (The Art of Football)

Cricket

In modern times, Cricket is a popular game. Played by Britons to prove their racial superiority, it was a good pastime for them. It is why cricket is majorly played in erstwhile British colonies, like India, Pakistan, Australia, the West Indies, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, South Africa, New Zealand, et cetera. Initially, it used to be a recreation which was played by members of the elite class, including Whites, and members of the royal family of princely states. In post-colonial times, it was a sluggish five-day event called Test cricket.

Gully cricket

With growing interest in cricket, children used to play gully cricket. Only a few take it seriously because of their family background and other constraints. This causes loss of interest in sports or game. Cricket was the game of elites, played for recreation. It did not generate revenue nor did it help in earning a livelihood. A player or sportsperson could not opt it as a career. Later with running commentaries becoming popular test cricket matches began gaining popularity. It was amusing to see people beeline to transistors, listening to the commentary, which apparently was chaotic noise. People would shout when a ground or aerial shot was played by the batsman. “It is six”, they would yell.Test cricket

Test Cricket took people by storm. Sunil Gavaskar, G. Vishwanath, Eknath Solkar, Sayed Kirmani, Farooq Engineer, Chandrasekar and Ajit Wadekar were the heroes of the game. Though incapable of understanding the jargon used by the commentator, people would stick to their transistors, endeavouring not to be left behind in the mad rat race.

Commercialisation of cricket

Cricket was commercialised by Kerry Packer, an Australian businessman who started World Series Cricket in 1977. Since then, cricket has not looked back and has become a money-making machine. A celebrity cricket player gets millions from their games and endorsements. The Cricket is now an all-year-round event with many formats and durations. It is now fast and aggressive with cutthroat competition, and people are vying for it. Their enthusiasm for this game is rapidly increasing. Cricket has overshadowed other games, especially the indigenous games like Kabaddi and Kho-Kho.

Outdoor and indoor sports

The outdoor games are demanding and comparatively more challenging than the indoor games. It would not be good to compare the two as good or bad, but in terms of physical involvement, the outdoor games have an edge. The track and field events need stamina, endurance and power along with alacrity and caution.

Track and field events (AI)

The track and field events, as the name indicates, are played in open fields and include Athletics, Javelin throw, Pole Vault, Long Jump, High Jump, Shooting and Archery.

The indoor games, on the other hand, need physical and mental fitness; they are a little less strenuous. Games like Volleyball, Table Tennis, swimming, wrestling and weightlifting are performed in an indoor stadium.

Board games

Apart from these well-talked-about games, there are games which are played in the confines of houses, clubs and bars. These include cards, carrom, Ludo-like, and Chess. These games, which used to be a source of recreation for men, women and children in their leisure hours, are gaining ground in current times and are touted as strong money-earning games. While Chess is a serious mind game, others are light and exert less pressure on the mind. Chess has been a reputed game, and winning a Grand Master’s title is a prestigious achievement.

Sports and body’s fitness

The games and sports effect on the body’s functioning, metabolism and overall fitness. When considered from their amusement aspect, it gives a two folded advantage of fitness and entertainment. For some people walking too is a game because of its nature and involvement of physical activity. Games function as an aerobic exercise, enhancing blood circulation and increasing heart work, walking is also a good exercise-cum-game. It entertains and amuses as a walker passes through beautiful natural scenery. Parallelly, it is a good aerobic exercise. So, people who take up brisk walking are virtually performing a Marathon Walk, though with considerably lesser concentration and effort.

A few people do not play games or participate in sports. During childhood, a child inspired by players often develops a liking for sports, but later it fades in the absence of motivation. A few decades ago, Playing games and sports by children were a waste of time, and playing them discouraged by parents till a few decades ago. Children who do not participate in sports or play games usually tend to become physically weak with feeble muscles. Playing sports and games enhances physical activities, make a child strong and mentally alert. Whereas field games make a player physically fit, board games enhance brain capacity and provide amusement.

Children’s play

Children in their early age allowed to play board games. During summer vacations when it was a difficult task to pass time after the annual examinations were over, summer vacation would start. It used to be a transition period when a child would wait for promotion in upper class and routine studies exempted. Primarily, they played Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, chess and the like. Children often gather at one of their classmates’ homes to play Ludo or other board games.

Computer games

Modern times are the computer age. Different activities have shrunk onto a computer screen. Games are not an exception. The speed and excitement, joined with virtual imagery, brought them a new thrill.

Computer games are a new genre (AI)

As people began playing games on computers, a new genre of gaming emerged. The advancements in technology and equipment provided a significant boost to computer gaming, transforming it into a massive industry. Powerful gaming computers, gaming consoles, sophisticated mice, and improved widescreen monitors have made the gaming experience exhilarating. The demand for more advanced algorithms and software has also led to the development of a thriving computer gaming software industry.

Games are inseperable

Time changes, and so does everything. From a humble “Gilli-Danda” and “Kanche” to cricket, football and the Olympics, the generations have come a long way. Game is an inseparable part of life. It accompanied humans from antediluvian times to recent times and shall continue to stay with them. It is, nevertheless, a choice not between game or no game, but also a choice of preference, likes and dislikes.
