Nature's Narrative

Telling the story of our planet

One and only entity that governs the whole universe is Nature. Some have personified Nature as Almighty who is omnipotent and omnipresent. I endearingly prefer to call Mother Nature who is caring and benevolent. She takes care of and nourishes us all.

As a member of the great family, we must respect and care for every element of Mother Nature. Felling trees causes habitat destruction, ultimately leading to a big and irrevocable destruction. It needs to be managed scientifically to keep a harmonious equilibrium.

Here comes the LiFE, which is Lifestyle for Environment.

I endeavour to create impactful, quality writing pieces to instigate the thought process. It is how I want to contribute my bit to the social and environmental cause.

Adaptation and Survival: Lessons from Nature

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

The Earth boasts diverse environments, enabling various life forms to adapt uniquely. The ideas of adaptation and survival are clear. Animals evolve features for survival. Humans have learned to modify their surroundings for comfort. They utilize technology and creativity. These advancements allow them to thrive in any climate. Despite modern convenience, humans keep an intrinsic connection to nature, often seeking balance through travel or solitude. Ultimately, while animals adapt to conditions, humans excel by adjusting their environment to suit their needs, highlighting life’s complexities.

Key Takeaways

  • The Earth supports diverse environments, enabling unique adaptations among life forms.
  • Animals adapt through evolutionary features, while humans modify their environment for comfort and survival.
  • Humans rely on technology, creativity, and social structures to thrive in various conditions.
  • Human adaptation differs from animal survival; humans create solutions rather than simply adjusting to their surroundings.
  • Despite advancements, humans maintain a connection to nature, highlighting the complexities of existence and the need for balance.

Introduction

The Earth is a unique planet in the solar system. Having varied topography and environment, it sustains a variety of life forms. The Earth offers something for every organism. There are hot, smouldering deserts and cold, frigid areas. It ranges from deep-sea waters to high, lofty mountains. An animal or plant of the area develops some peculiar qualities to sustain the harshness of its habitat. Above all, the desert is more challenging. It can be a hot, sandy desert or a cold, icy desert. Life adapts itself according to the conditions. (National Geographic)

Unique and diversified life

The flora and fauna of the hot, sandy desert have unique features. They save and conserve water to cope with the scanty water situation. Phrynosoma, a small thorny reptilian creature, lives in the area. During the day, temperatures hover at 40 to 45 degrees Celsius. Nights are very cold. Phrynosoma has adapted to live in the extreme harshness of Nature. The most striking feature of this animal is that its skin can absorb water. It fulfils its need by absorbing dew water.

Humans Learned and Evolved

With time, human beings learned ways to comfort and ease their lives. They evolved family and society for collective and individual safety, comfort and luxury. From wayfarers to settlers and organised farmers to traders, human history has passed many phases, learning and evolving.

(a) Adjusted not adapted

Human beings, unlike the small creatures described above, have learned and evolved to live comfortably in any situation. Human adaptation and survival are different from animals and plants. They can dwell in frigid sub-zero temperatures to scorching heat, from excessively rainy areas to comparatively dry ones. It is not because he and his body are adapted according to the weather and physical conditions of the area. Instead, they have researched and invented ways to condition the physical environment to suit his senses and body. He invented AC, coolers and other means to get respite from the scorching and sweltering heat. He can live in cold regions by keeping himself warm.

(b) Dwelling Is Essential

One essential thing required by an organism is a dwelling which can protect it from direct heat, cold and rain. Animals, having sensory organs, can feel the temperature change. Their bodies are naturally protected, and by supplementing them with external means, they adjust according to their surroundings. Initially, humans started dwelling in caves. The cave dwellers had their ways to protect themselves from the harsh weather conditions. They learned survival by adaptation. Even in today’s developed world, people use Igloos for dwelling in frigid polar areas of the north.

(c) Ease of Life

Modern human, Homo sapiens, have evolved ultra-modern facilities to ease their lives. They have large palatial houses equipped with modern facilities. These homes are fitted with automated systems. Everything in them pampers their senses and rejuvenates them even in the adverse conditions of life. After securing the need for shelter, the next necessity of an organism is food.

(d) Food for Energy and Thought

The food is essential to get energy for work. A basic animal’s food needs are frugal. It does not bother about taste and its nutritional values. Most animals instinctively swallow their food. Yet, some advanced predatory animals hunt and feed on small herbivores. These herbivores chew their food. Humans have access to modern facilities. Their learning about adaptation and survival pushed them to develop a sense of taste and aroma of the food. They have experimented in culinary practice to evolve enhanced tastes, retaining the nutritional value of the food. Humans have elevated it to a luxury status. A huge amount of money is invested and splurged.

Most advanced creature

Human beings are at the pinnacle of the evolutionary tree. They are evolved after years of Nature’s persistent experimentation and natural selection. With their advanced and highly complicated brains, they learned the laws of nature and adjusted to suit various situations. The human mental energy surpassed many things. It is this that humans have successfully adapted to different environments. The contributory factors for adaptability are various. Let us see some.

(a) Creativity

In order of priority among various factors of adaptability, food and shelter come first. Next is the enhanced intellect of human beings. It gives them logic, reasoning and aesthetic sense. looking around, they find amusing things. Cogitation and reasoning gave them an edge. This was a step further towards adaptation and survival. Humans were not mere organisms. They evolved as prudently thinking individuals with advanced cognitive powers. They started a family and developed a society. The creative prowess of human beings propels them to do something new and contribute to society. As social animals, humans need companionship to share their joy. They also need company to share their sorrow, join in community functions, pray, and celebrate. This helps them bind together.

(b) Connected World

The Earth is the home of about nine billion human beings of different races and ethnicities, divided into 195 countries. Despite visual differences, humans are connected. It is the great accommodating power of humans. Using a medium, people connect to each other in various ways. One of the most important is communication. The invention of fast, efficient, and convenient modes of communication has significantly helped connect people. It reaches every corner of the world. One can easily converse with friends and family members residing thousands of miles away. Travel is yet another type of communication. People now have access to various fast, comfortable and efficient systems to commute. It is well-developed all-weather roads, highways and expressways, railways, airways or waterways. Choices are many.

(c) Amusement

It is a rosy idea to leave amenities and conveniences and live in a hostile environment. The thrill of the “trip” would be short-lived. Hiking, trekking, or camping offers a way to experience difficulty firsthand. Even travelling in a camper van can offer this thrill.

(d) Armchair brooding

Armchair brooding and spending time with nature is a rosy ideas. It soothes an aching soul and rejuvenates, and offers a great break. To survive, yet, humans have to work. After sometimes they return to “normal” life. This is a type of adaptability which helps humans adjust to almost every situation.

Is Isolated Life Easy?

Very few people prefer a solitary life living in difficult terrain. The choosers deliberately take it purposely for “Spiritual upliftment” or as an “atonement”. Travelling is fun when it is guided and occasional. Monotony and dullness soon overpowers. Humans are adapted to a cooperative life. They are mutually dependent upon others.

An Anchorite

An anchorite leads a free life, leaving worldly things. Yet prefers to live in an inhabited area or in its vicinity. Contrary to a common person, an ascetic lives freely within a religious perimeter.

To Conclude

The discourse tries to underline the fact that animals survive by adapting according to the environment, developing distinct features. Unlike them, human beings have learned ways to condition the situation according to their needs. It is why humans can survive in any condition by using the various means they have developed and evolved. Yet, humans need to learn a lot from Nature, which teaches to use as per the necessity and requirements. There is enough for every individual organism.

So, unlike other animals and plants, living anywhere is not difficult for the human race. Nevertheless, a frugal life is fun, which gives a burden-free life to spend time with Nature.
