Student life is a golden period in the life of an individual. It begins in school days, when a child embarks on the journey of learning. The formative period of school teaches them lessons that act as a stepping stone in shaping future life.

After early hesitation and adjustments, school time becomes the best time for a child. Children enjoy while they learn, make friends and play together. Reflections of school day seldom appear in later life, but they occupy a significant chunk of their journey. The time spent in school feels like a distant dream.

From childhood to their teenage the journey is a roller-coaster ride for a budding youth. The childhood memories creep in and shake the subconscious mind. It is like a lone tree which withstood the vagaries of time. Branches of the tree swing in the breeze, rattling its leaves efforting to tell a story.

There was no teacher in the class. It was a free-for-all time for them. The class leader was trying to control them, but his efforts were not enough. Children were yelling, squealing, and happily running around in the class. It was disturbing other adjoining classes.

The principal, who was affectionate about the children of his school, scolded them for their rogue behaviour.

After a preliminary inquiry, he authoritatively declared to converse about history. History was an interesting topic, but there was a different degree murmering among children. Closely observing the mood of the class, he started saying, “What do you know about the human race? Do you know who we are and where we have come from?” The whole class was mum. Slowly, he started his narration. Steadily, he built up a concept. The principal was speaking very interestingly. It was the first introduction of a topic which later came to be known as anthropology.

It probably kick-started the interest in something close to the heart. The topic did not seem very close yet. Still, it educated on a large number of things about humans in a scientific manner. Something started brewing, but it was latent. It suddenly expressed itself when a stream was to be chosen in the later part of the study.

A new session had started. Children were on the threshold of their teenage years. It was time to choose a stream of further study. The class teacher was asking every student their choice. One of the students was clueless and hence restless. He was ignorant about it. Till now, he studied almost every topic. He studied everything from geography to mathematics. Now, he had to choose a stream. As his name approached, a combination suddenly flashed from nowhere. It was entirely different from that of those opted by others. He repeated the combination several times. It sounded sensible. “Science Biology”, mustering courage, he said hesitatingly at his turn. He was pleasantly surprised to know that such a combination existed.
Close to Nature
He coincidentally opted for a combination that abruptly flashed in his mind. Later, he realised that the stream was very close to his heart. He enjoyed learning about colourful flowers and various types of fruits and vegetables. Observing insects hover on the flowers always fascinated him. He was amused to learn about the colourful world of animals, plants, and food grains that give energy.

As a child, he used to feel pleasure in seeing swimming fish. He fondly remembers his childhood days when watching swimming fish in a river was a joy. It used to fill a sense of respect for Nature, realising their contribution to sustenance.

The fascination for life sciences never waned in him. Paradoxically, he was a mediocre student. He never got “excellent” marks in examinations. He wished and tried his best to pursue a career in it. Nonetheless, destiny had a different plan for him. The interest provided him with an understanding of life’s processes that later helped him realise the intricacies of life.

Decades of the years, he feels the same old fascination for life science. It has not died down but has become more grounded. This growth is akin to dichotomous branching. Such branching leads to a large number of plant and animal varieties. Observing the gradual revelation of nature’s drama is profoundly satisfying. Piece by piece, it forms a whole picture akin to a jigsaw puzzle. Stories of joining fragments to construct a full fossilised skeleton of an extinct animal are thrilling. Starting from a single tooth to full grown 3D model is thrilling. The achievement stands as a testament. Scientists are making relentless efforts.
